Applies to: Kurzweil 3000 Macintosh
Issue:
Kurzweil 3000 for Mac is receiving an error message on launch, and it will not open properly. Please see below for two known issues that may cause this problem.
Solutions:
You may receive this error if your software is out of date
Update Kurzweil 3000 for Mac to the latest version that you own, the latest versions for v4 and v5 can be downloaded from here. This is especially relevant if you are using an older build of Kurzweil 3000 Mac on a newer Macintosh Operating System, i.e. 10.8+.
How to Update:
Kurzweil 3000 Mac updates differently from the Windows version, you will need to download the newest build from the link above, after this is finished you would:
1. Open the .dmg file, this is the file that downloads when you get the latest version.
2. Navigate to the Kurzweil 3000 application, it looks like a book.
3. Open your Finder, and then proceed to drag and drop the application to your applications folder. If you previously installed Kurzweil 3000 as per our instructions, it should ask you to overwrite your software, please select yes to fully update to the newest build.
You may receive this error if you have IVox version 3 voices installed on your Mac OS
If you have IVox version 3 voices, Kurzweil may receive an error on launch. This is currently a known issue that is being investigated by our engineers for a solution. The current workaround is to go back to IVox version 2 or lower voices, please see below for more details.
How to resolve the IVox issue:
1. Perform a spotlight search for IVox, this should locate the IVox Voice Manager, open it.
2. Go to Tools > Uninstall Infovox IVox
3. Reboot, after rebooting the IVox voices should be fully removed, they should no longer show in Kurzweil as choices.
4. If you would still like to use the IVox voices, you could install the v2 IVox voices at this point, as version 2 of the IVox voices are not known to cause a conflict at this time.
If you need more information about your IVox installation, refer to the official IVox manual here.

Troubleshooting registration errors
General Questions
What editions of Kurzweil must I register with a serial number in order to use?
Kurzweil 3000 Standalone, Kurzweil 3000 Network
In the case of Kurzweil 3000 Network, only the Network administrator tool on the machine acting as a server needs to be registered.
How do I find the edition of Kurzweil 3000 that I'm installing?
There are a few ways to find this out. Perhaps the easiest way is to look on the front of your case that Kurzweil 3000 came in; it should list on the front Standalone, Network, or Web License.
If this information is not available to you, it's best to contact the holder of your order information; the order should contain the edition. If that is not possible or the information is lost, please contact customer service to inquire further.
Where is the serial number located, and what does it look like?
Your serial number is either on a card that came in your box, or on the back of your box/case that Kurzweil 3000 came in on a white sticker. Your serial number will start with a 3 for the Windows version and a 2 for the Mac version. Serial numbers are typically 13 digits long. For example, a serial number starting with 313 would be for Kurzweil 3000 version 13, for Windows. A serial number starting with 205 would be for Kurzweil 3000 version 5, for Mac.
If multiple licenses were purchased, at the end of the serial number there may be a hyphened suffix (e.g. 31300123456789-5) with a value representing your number of licenses. This suffix (-5) should not be entered during the registration process.
You may also notice PRO C or NT ADMIN in front of your serial number, these are not part of your actual serial number; please do not enter them during the registration process.
What if there is no serial number in the locations described above?
If you have no serial number on the back of your case, first check the edition on the front of the case. If it states that you have Web License, the Web License version does not have serial numbers used for registration. If you find you have the Web License version and just installed Kurzweil 3000 but are being prompted to register you will need to un-install and re-install the software. During the re-install process make sure to select the Web License version when prompted instead of Standalone.
If you were provided a username and password for firefly or VPORT, use those credentials to log into an installed Kurzweil 3000 Web License client.
I've lost my serial number, is there a way to retrieve it?
Please contact customer service and they will do their best to assist you. For customer service to best assist you, please collect all available information that can obtain about your order before reaching out to them if possible.
Is it possible to use a Mac serial number to register a Windows version or vice versa?
No, it is not possible. If you have a serial number starting with 2, it is for Mac, and if you have a serial number starting with 3, it's for Windows. These serial numbers will only register their prospective versions. If you are interested in converting one of your Standalone or Network licenses to a different platform or are interesting in the Web License Edition as it is dual platform, please contact customer service.

Troubleshooting registration errors
You are receiving a message that you must be an administrator
If you are the administrator and you are receiving this error, then you are most likely trying to register an older version of Kurzweil on a newer operating system.
First, try updating your software first and then trying again. This may resolve the issue and it's good to be updated as much as possible.
Alternate solution (Win):
1. Double click into your C: drive from Computer in Windows
2. Navigate to: C:\Program Files (x86)\Kurzweil Educational Systems\Kurzweil 3000
3. Find the Kurzweil 3000 application, right click it and select Run as Administrator
4. Select yes, allow, etc. to any prompts that may appear after selecting Run as Administrator
5. When you run Kurzweil 3000 via the above steps, you should be able to register without error.
Your System Code is empty
You most likely are not logged into your computer as an administrator. Please contact someone with administrative credentials for the computer you're using and ask them to log in and register the software for you. If you are the administrator, please check your system time, date, and year and correct them if they are inaccurate. If none of these are issues, and you are running a Windows operating system; please try the steps listed above under the Alternate solution section.
You receive a message that your serial number is not valid version X serial number for your copy of Kurzweil, where X is the version number.
Please check your version that you have installed via Help > About Kurzweil 3000 in the software itself. If you find a mismatch, for instance it states you have version 12, but you are expecting a different version, please install the proper version and try registering again. Your serial number must be for the same version you have installed, see below for some serial number examples for ease of identifying your version number.
Version examples; serial number starts with:
204... – Macintosh version 4
205... – Macintosh version 5
310... – Windows version 10
311... – Windows version 11
312... – Windows version 12
313... – Windows version 13
Etc.
You receive an error that your user name is already taken
To resolve, please try another user name. If you are having trouble finding something unique, try reversing your first/last name or adding some numbers that you will remember to your user name.

Guide to updating / patching Kurzweil 3000
The K3Automater is a program that is typically used by institutions who offer a scanning service to their students. It is designed for mass conversion of files captured by a high-speed scanner into .KES format.
If you have a high speed scanner, it is often more efficient to use that scanner's software to scan your material rather than use Kurzweil 3000. The result of the scanning process is a set of TIFF files.
Kurzweil 3000 Automater simplifies the process of converting those scanned TIFF files to KES files.
The Automater can also be used to convert PDF files.
The typical workflow for a customer using the K3Automater would go something like this:
1. Create a "source" folder on your hard drive (or elsewhere on your system), and place the TIFF and/or PDF files into it.
2. Create a "destination" folder on your hard drive (or elsewhere on your system). This is where you want Kurzweil 3000 to place the converted KES files.
3. Run K3Automater.exe on a system that has Kurzweil 3000 installed.
The Kurzweil 3000 Automater dialog box appears.
4. Specify the folder which contains the TIFF and/or PDF files in the Source Hierarchy box, and the folder which you would like to use for the KES files in the Destination Hierarchy box.
5. Specify or browse to the folder which you would like to use for the KES files in the Destination Hierarchy box.
6. If you want, you can use Command Arguments to instruct the Automater to perform additional tasks, such as deleting the source file after conversion.
7. Click OK.
Notes:
You can add more files to the Source folder while the Automater is converting existing files. You do not need to restart; it checks the source folder every few seconds for additional work.
The Automater remembers the Source and Destination hierarchies you specify, so the next time you use it, these hierarchies appear in their respective boxes.
If Kurzweil 3000 is configured to use the Ask for User at Startup option, you should use the -user:name command option. If you don't, you will be forced to log on each time the Automater begins to convert a file in the Source folder.
Note: Always update Kurzweil before you attempt troubleshooting. Please review our Guide to updating / patching Kurzweil 3000 if you are unsure how to patch or update your Kurzweil product before proceeding.
Note: certain filenames will not be processed correctly by the Automater. Avoid spaces, hyphens, and any characters besides alpha and numeric..
1. Close Kurzweil 3000 and any programs that are currently running.
2. Place your Kurzweil 3000 Windows install CD into your CD-ROM drive. An install window will pop-up prompting you to install. Cancel out of this.
3. In Windows, click on Start > Control Panel > Printers and Other Hardware > Printers and Faxes > Add Printer
4. Double-click Add Printer to Run the Hardware Wizard to add a printer
5. In the Hardware Wizard, choose to create a Local Printer > add the printer manually > assign it to LPT1 port > choose the option Have Disk
6. In the Have Disk window, click Browse. Browse to D:\KESIPrint\2000 > click on the .INF file you see there and Open it.
7. Follow the prompts on the screen to finish the installation of the KESI Virtual Printer
8. After the Virtual Printer is installed, go to Printers and Faxes again.
9. Right-click the KESI Virtual Printer, and choose Properties.
10. In the KESI Virtual Printer Properties window, go to the Advanced tab. Mark the radio button (circle button) Print Directly to Printer. Click Apply.
11. Go to the Ports tab. Click Add Port, choose the port type Local Port from the list, and click the New Port... button. Name the port Kesi Virtual and click OK.
12. Close the window where you can select a new port type, and go back to the Ports tab of the KESI Virtual Printer Properties.
13. Click Apply to assign the KESI Virtual Printer to your new Local Port titled Kesi Virtual. Click OK to close the Properties window.
14. Run Kurzweil and minimize it. Try to print something to the KESI Virtual Printer. It should print out correctly into Kurzweil.
Make sure .pdf files are properly associating themselves with Kurzweil:
1. Navigate to C:\Program files\Kurzweil educational systems\Diags\fileassociate.exe. (On Windows Vista or Windows 7 64 bit), Navigate to C:\Program files (x86)\Kurzweil educational systems\Diags\fileassociate.exe.
2. Enter PDF in the extension and click Get Current Association
3. It should show you the correct path for acrobat version x
4. Click OK
5. Click Associate and accept the change (even though it's not really changing anything)
6. Try opening a pdf again
7. Run the Automater again
8. If you are still experiencing errors, try changing your OCR Engine. This can be done through Kurzweil. Click on Tools > Options > then click on the Scanning icon. Try FineReader, ScanSoft Accurate and Fast.
9. Finally, please verify your system specs. If your computer is lacking RAM or processing speed, you will encounter issues using the Automater and opening up larger files.
For customers that do not have access to their kurzweil 3000 media, Or are looking for the latest version they can download from this Direct Link:
-in:file name.foo file to open
-out:file name.foo file to save
-stat:file name.foo file to save recognition statistics
-user:name change user name
-x exit end the command line (must be last)
-d delete previous "-in" file
-2page turn on 2 page mode
-autorotate force auto-rotate ON
-rotate0 rotate 0 (disable auto-rotate)
-despeckle force despeckle ON
-nodespeckle force despeckle OFF
-deskew force deskew ON
-nodeskew force deskew OFF
-despeckle force despeckle ON
-nodespeckle force despeckle OFF
Typical usage:
-in: foo-bar.tif -out: my file.kes -d -x
Notes:
Currently -d applies only to TIF and PDF files.
Currently only one file may be opened.
Use full pathnames for -in and -out when running from a DOS command line.
If the output file exists, it will be overwritten without warning.
Filenames can contain "-" but not " -" (hyphen with a preceding space).
The Automater's Statistics function can help you to determine the quality of the recognition process performed by the OCR engine selected in the Kurzweil 3000 Scanning Options pane.
To view recognition statistics:
Click the Automater's Statistics button.
This opens the Recognition Statistics dialog box, which contains a number of statistics regarding the recognition of the files processed by the Automater.
For each processed file, the following statistics are provided:
The number of pages.
The number of characters recognized.
The Confidence Level.
Confidence Level is a measure of how confident the system is about the recognition process. The higher the number, the more confident Kurzweil 3000 is regarding the accuracy of the recognition process. You can consider a Confidence Level of 95 as a borderline level between a good recognition and one that requires a visual inspection of the file.
When you inspect your files, look for some of the following recognition anomalies that may be affecting the confidence level:
If the files were originally created via scanning, look for broken or touching characters. This could indicate that the original scanning brightness was too low. You'll will need to edit the underlying text in order to correct these problems.
In some cases, the OCR engine might try to recognize text within a graphic and either fail completely or misrecognize the characters, causing a lower confidence level number. However, this may or may not be important to you, since you might not want this type of text read anyway. If you don't want the text read, and Kurzweil 3000 is reading it (poorly), use the Zone Editor to designate the area that the text appears in as a graphic.

Applies to Versions: Kurzweil 3000 Standalone, Network, Web License v13 (Win)
Warning: These instructions do not apply to Kurzweil 3000 v12. For version 12 instructions, please view the following article: http://support.cambiumtech.com/index.php?pg=kb.page&id=1621
This article is written for system or network administrators attempting to create an enterprise-level silent installation/deployment of Kurzweil 3000. Desktop technicians, teachers, or home users should conduct manual installations of the software.
1. Download the latest build of Kurzweil 3000 and use that to create your package.
The latest build of Kurzweil 3000 v13 (Win) can be downloaded here: http://www.kurzweiledu.com/k3win (choose the v13 build)
The download is a self-extracting EXE. The extracting process will create an InstallTemp folder that contains the full contents of the Kurzweil 3000 v13 DVD.
Warning: If you create your installation package from older media, such as a release DVD or an older download, you will encounter installation errors following these instructions as the architecture of our installers have changed.
2. Create a shared folder on your network named K3000InstallPackage. All user groups will need at least read and execute permissions to this folder.
3. Copy the entire contents of the extracted InstallTemp folder (all of the files and folders inside InstallTemp) to the K3000InstallPackage shared folder.
Execute a Windows Installer (msiexec) installation via a command-line window (cmd.exe) or .bat script following the below parameters and examples listed in each table for whatever client type you are attempting to install.
If you want to perform a manual local test, because you're executing a silent (/qn) installation, you will not see a UI during installation. To monitor installation, you can observe the msiexec.exe process in Task Manager. The installation should be considered complete when:
a) All instances of the msiexec.exe process are no longer taking any CPU resources.
b) There is a Kurzweil 3000 shortcut created on the desktop.
c) There is an entry Kurzweil 3000 v.13 in Windows' installed programs.
Warning: If you want to perform a manual local test using Windows Vista or Windows 7 with User Account Control (UAC) enabled, make sure to Run as Administrator cmd.exe or the .bat file you execute.

Kurzweil requires a certain set of property values to be passed to the MSI in order to install correctly. These property values can be passed via command-line as noted in the above tables and examples. However, when deploying through systems where these additional command-line switches may not be guaranteed to execute, it is recommended to directly modify these property values in the MSI file's database Property table. This way you don't have to worry about adding additional command-line switches to the package you're building. It also simplifies future redistrubtion of the MSI.
It is recommended to download and install Orca to edit values in the database Property table of the file. Orca can be downloaded here: http://www.technipages.com/download-orca-msi-editor.html
You can also download it as an attachment at the bottom of this article.
Instructions
1. Download and install Orca. Choose to do a Complete install.
2. Navigate to \\SERVERNAME\K3000InstallPackage\Software\ and right-click > Edit with Orca the Kurzweil 3000 v.13.msi file.
3. Find the Property table (in the left column of Orca's GUI).
4. Rows for AUTO, EDITION, SERVER, and AUTOUPDATE are all found in the Property table (right side of Orca's GUI). Sort the Property table alphabetically so you can easily find the applicable fields. Click in the applicable value fields to edit them. Do not attempt to edit fields/values not specified within this article.
5. When entering values in to database fields, do not include "quotes" around each value like you would when passing Property values via command-line. Edit the applicable values and then save changes to the Kurzweil 3000 v.13.msi file. Do not create an .mst file to apply the changes.
6. After saving the changes and exiting Orca, right-click > Edit with Orca the Kurzweil 3000 v.13.msi file again to verify that your changes took.
If you edit the file this way you do not have to worry about passing these property values during installation via command-line.
It's important that the Kurzweil 3000 v.13.msi be run from its shared folder ...\K3000InstallPackage\Software you created in an earlier step, as it calls various resource files from its location during installation. If the Kurzweil 3000 v.13.msi file is cached locally to the machine and run from the local temp location (e.g. SCCM packages can be built to do this), it may break these resource links and not install properly. So after editing the Kurzweil 3000 v.13.msi file with Orca, do not move it elsewhere, or (re)move files or folders inside the K3000InstallPackage folder.
Restarting after installation is not required.
MSI patches for Kurzweil 3000 v13 are available on our FTP here: ftp://ftp.kurzweiledu.com/pub/kurzweil3000/version130/patches/
When patching, only the latst patch is required. If you just installed the software using the directions above, you will not need to worry about patching as you're using the latest version.
Instructions
1. Create a shared folder on your network called K3000PatchX where X equals the version number. If you followed the above directions for initial installation deployment, this folder can be located inside of your K3000InstallPackage folder. All user groups will need at least read and execute permissions to this folder.
2. Download both the Data1.cab file and patch.msi to the empty K3000PatchX folder.
3. This single patch can be applied to any installed Kurzweil 3000 v13 client type.
4. Unlike the Kurzweil 3000 v.13.msi, no special property values are required for the patch.msi.
5. It's important that the patch.msi is run from its K3000PatchX folder where its Data1.cab file is also located, as it calls resources from that Data1.cab file. Do not create a package that will cache the patch.msi file locally and run it from a location away from its Data1.cab file.
6. Restarting the computer is not required.
Command-line example:
msiexec /i "\\SERVERNAME\K3000InstallPackage\K3000PatchX\patch.msi" /qn /norestart

Applies to Versions: Kurzweil 3000 Standalone, Network, Web License v12 (Win)
Warning: These instructions do not apply to Kurzweil 3000 v13. For version 13 instructions, please view the following article: http://support.cambiumtech.com/index.php?pg=kb.page&id=1573
This article is written for system or network administrators attempting to create an enterprise-level silent installation/deployment of Kurzweil 3000. Desktop technicians, teachers, or home users should conduct manual installations of the software.
1. Download the latest build of Kurzweil 3000 and use that to create your package.
The latest build of Kurzweil 3000 v12 (Win) can be downloaded here: http://www.kurzweiledu.com/k3win (choose the v12 option)
The download is a self-extracting EXE. The extracting process will create an InstallTemp folder that contains the full contents of the Kurzweil 3000 v12 DVD.
The installation should be considered complete when:
a) All instances of the msiexec.exe process are no longer taking any CPU resources.
b) There is a Kurzweil 3000 shortcut created on the desktop.
c) There is an entry Kurzweil 3000 v.12 in Windows' installed programs.
Warning: If you want to perform a manual local test using Windows Vista or Windows 7 with User Account Control (UAC) enabled, make sure to Run as Administrator cmd.exe or the .bat file you execute.

Note: It is advised to not install Network Remote Clients remotely or through deployments. The idea behind a Network Remote Client is to install Kurzweil 3000 on a user's home computer, where it will temporarily function without access to the Internet or a network connection. After installation the Network Remote Client will not function until it is activated with a License-to-Go code. You can generate License-to-Go codes from your Kurzweil 3000 Network Engine (your license server). Generating such codes will "check out" the license from your server. Warning: The Network Remote Client will only function when run by an Administrator. Restricted users cannot run the Network Remote client. It also simplifies future redistribution of the MSI.
It is recommended to download and install Orca to edit values in the database Property table of the file. Orca can be downloaded here: http://www.technipages.com/download-orca-msi-editor.html
You can also download it as an attachment at the bottom of this article.
Instructions
1. Download and install Orca. Choose to do a Complete install.
2. Navigate to \\SERVERNAME\K3000InstallPackage\Software\ and right-click > Edit with Orca the Kurzweil 3000 v.12.msi file.
3. Find the Property table (in the left column of Orca's GUI).
4. Rows for AUTO, EDITION, PRODUCT, SERVER, and AUTOUPDATE are all found in the Property table (right side of Orca's GUI). Sort the Property table alphabetically so you can easily find the applicable fields. Click in the applicable value fields to edit them. Do not attempt to edit fields/values not specified within this article.
5. When entering values in to database fields, do not include "quotes" around each value like you would when passing Property values via command-line. Edit the applicable values and then save changes to the Kurzweil 3000 v.12.msi file.
It's important that the Kurzweil 3000 v.12.msi be run from its shared folder ...\K3000InstallPackage\Software you created in an earlier step, as it calls various resource files from its location during installation. If the Kurzweil 3000 v.12.msi file is cached locally to the machine and run from the local temp location (e.g. SCCM packages can be built to do this), it may break these resource links and not install properly. So after editing the Kurzweil 3000 v.12.msi file with Orca, do not move it elsewhere, or (re)move files or folders inside the K3000InstallPackage folder.
Restarting after installation is not required.
MSI patches for Kurzweil 3000 v12 are available on our FTP here: ftp://ftp.kurzweiledu.com/pub/kurzweil3000/version120/patches
When patching, only the latest patch is required. If you just installed the software using the directions above, you will not need to worry about patching as you're using the latest version.
You want to download all of the files from the applicable .../MSIPatch12xx/ folder on the FTP site.
Instructions
1. Create a shared folder on your network called MSIPatch12xx where xx equals the decimal version number. If you followed the above directions for initial installation deployment, this folder can be located inside of your K3000InstallPackage folder. All user groups will need at least read and execute permissions to this folder.
2. Download both the Data1.cab file and patch.msi to the empty MSIPatch12xx folder.
3. This single patch can be applied to any installed Kurzweil 3000 v12 client type.
4. Unlike the Kurzweil 3000 v.12.msi, no special property values are required for the patch.msi.
5. It's important that the patch.msi is run from its MSIPatch12xx folder where its Data1.cab file is also located, as it calls resources from that Data1.cab file. Do not create a package that will cache the patch.msi file locally and run it from a location away from its Data1.cab file.
6. Restarting the computer is not required.
Command-line example:
msiexec /i "\\SERVERNAME\K3000InstallPackage\MSIPatch12xx\patch.msi" /qn /norestart

A LearnStation has limited capability compared to the Professional Black & White and Professional Color versions of Kurzweil 3000.
A LearnStation is designed as a cost-effective solution to open already created Kurzweil image files (of the .kes file type), read them, edit them, and use them as necessary. A LearnStation is not designed to create or convert new image files.
In other words, you make the Kurzweil image file with a Professional version and you can use a LearnStation to read and use that file from another location without having to purchase an additional Professional copy.
The version 12 LearnStation will also open NIMAS and text files. So if you're simply looking for a NIMAS or text file reader, the version 12 LearnStation will do this.
Additionally, a LearnStation can read basic text (not .pdfs or images) on websites through its "Read the Web" feature that it shares with other versions.
A LearnStation cannot do the following:
For home users without a school or organization to create or supply Kurzweil image (.kes) files for them, it is strongly recommended to purchase either the Professional Black & White or Professional Color version of Kurzweil 3000.
Last Updated: March 2013
Without the latest Mozilla Firefox add-on file (.xpi) included in the latest Kurzweil 3000 (K3000) software updates, Read the Web may not function properly with Firefox v19 and higher.
Depending on your version of K3000, Read the Web may only work with earlier releases of Firefox.
Note for Kurzweil 3000 USB users: If you are using the Kurzweil 3000 USB product, there are currently known issues when attempting to use Read the Web with newer versions of Firefox. If you are using Kurzweil 3000 USB v13, it is recommended that you use Firefox v13. If you are using Kurzweil 3000 USB v11 or v12, it is recommended that you use Firefox v3.6.
Follow the troubleshooting steps below that correspond to your version of K3000. Also, if you're using a Windows 64-bit operating system, you have to perform additional troubleshooting steps noted below.
If you are using Windows Vista or Windows 7, it is recommended that you disable User Account Control (UAC) before performing these steps:
How to disable UAC on Windows 7
How to disable UAC on Windows Vista
1. Update to K3000 v13.17 or higher. This can be done within the software, by clicking on Online -> Updates... and following the prompts to download and install the latest update. After you verify that K3000 is up-to-date, exit out of K3000.
2. Have Firefox v19 or higher installed on the machine.
3. In Firefox, verify that an older version of the K3000 Read the Web add-on is not already installed. Launch Firefox. In Firefox, click Tools -> Add-ons. In your Extensions list, locate any add-on labeled Read the Web or KESIReader, select it, and click the Remove button. Restart Firefox after removing the add-on.
4. Download the attached kesireader.xpi file (this is the new Read the Web add-on). This file can be downloaded from a link at the bottom of this page.
(Optional) The updated KESIReader.xpi is included in the Kurzweil 3000 v13.17 update. This can be installed by launching Kurzweil 3000, going to Tools > Options > Reading Tab, selecting Mozilla Firefox under the Read the Web section and following the installation prompts.
5. Drag and drop the .xpi file into an open Firefox window. You will be prompted to install the add-on. Follow the prompts to install.
6. Launch K3000. Click Tools -> Options -> Reading. In the Reading Options window, select/verfiy that Mozilla Firefox is set as your Read the Web browser. Click OK.
7. You should now be able to Read the Web.
The steps above for version 13 also apply to versions 11 and 12. Follow those steps.
Because you're using a new add-on with an outdated version of K3000, you will be limited in how you can use Read the Web. If you attempt to launch Read the Web through the K3000 menu, you will get stuck in an installation prompt loop. You will not be able to launch Firefox and Read the Web.
The solution is to simply launch Firefox independent of K3000 and click the Read button in the Firefox Reading toolbar. In other words, don't try to Read the Web from K3000 -- only use the Read button in Firefox.
1, Update to K3000 v4.6.13 (if running v4) or v5.0.13 (if running v5). You can download the update from our website. The update download is packaged as a .dmg file. After downloading, open the .dmg file to mount it as a volume. Click the Kurzweil 3000.app inside, then drag and drop it into your Applications list. This will over-write your existing Kurzweil 3000 application, updating it the downloaded version. You will not lose any of your settings, data, or files doing this.
2. Have Firefox v19 installed on the machine.
5. Drag and drop the .xpi file into an open Firefox window. You will be prompted to install the add-on. Follow the prompts to install.
6. You should now be able to use the K3000 Reader Window to Read the Web.
If you find that the Read the Web toolbar is installed properly in Firefox, but the voice is not reading when the Play button is selected, this may be due to a conflict with the Reading Voice you are attempting to use. It is advised that you use one of the included High Quality Cepstral voices that come with the Kurzweil 3000 software to ensure compatibility.
You can change the voice by launching Kurzweil 3000 and going to Window > Show Reader. This will bring up a blue window with play controls that will also allow you to choose the reading voice from a drop down menu.
Follow the above steps for the applicable version of K3000.
Download the attached create_symbolic_link_for_KES64bit.bat file. Look at the bottom of this page for the download link.
After downloading the file, right-click it and select "Run as Administrator". This will run the .bat file, creating link in the Windows registry.
If you do not run this .bat file, you will not be able to Read the Web in Firefox unless Firefox is launched through the Read the Web button in K3000.
In Firefox, click View -> Toolbars and verify that your KESI Reader Toolbar is checked in the menu.
First, try to click yes, and then use the feature, if it does not work read below.
If this is occurring on a Windows 64-bit computer, download and run the attached .bat file at the bottom of this page.
If running the .bat file does not resolve the issue, for the Kurzweil toolbar to work in Firefox your active Firefox window must be launched through Kurzweil's menu. The solution is to close out of all open Firefox windows and launch a new Firefox window by clicking Read -> Read the Web in Kurzweil 3000.
Another solution would be to close Kurzweil 3000 and Firefox, then initiating Read the Web from Firefox and having it open Kurzweil 3000.
Of note, Read the Web will only work for one Firefox window at a time. This means that only the original Firefox window launched via Read -> Read the Web in Kurzweil will work. If you're confused about which Firefox window was your original, please close out of all Firefox windows and start again by clicking Read -> Read the Web in Kurzweil 3000.
Our development team is aware of this issue and is investigating.
This is another known "quirk" with the Firefox KESI Reader Add-On. Our development team is currently investigating a solution to this issue.

Always update Kurzweil before you attempt troubleshooting
Before you attempt any troubleshooting steps or contact us for technical support, it's always a good idea to make sure your version of Kurzweil 3000 is fully updated for the version you have installed. It's possible that a troubleshooting solution we provide may not work if you're using an outdated version, for example 13.01 instead of 13.10. Often you may find that simply updating Kurzweil (a.k.a. patching) will resolve your problem.
The most simple way to update Kurzweil is through its built-in updater: on the Kurzweil 3000 menu click Online -> Updates... (seen below) and follow the prompts to download and install the latest update (i.e. patch) found by the auto-search.
Tips for using Kurzweil 3000's built-in updater
If you use Windows Vista or Windows 7, a security feature called User Account Control (UAC) may prevent Kurzweil's built-in updater from functioning. If you have errors during the update process you may need to turn off UAC in Windows; or right-click the Kurzweil 3000.exe and select Run as Administrator. The full path of the .exe on 32-bit operating systems is C:\Program Files\Kurzweil Educational Systems\Kurzweil 3000\Kurzweil 3000.exe; the full path on 64-bit operating systems is C:\Program Files (x86)\Kurzweil Educational Systems\Kurzweil 3000\Kurzweil 3000.exe.
You can always find out what version of Kurzweil 3000 you have by clicking Help -> About Kurzweil 3000...(as seen below) in the Kurzweil menu. This will open an About Kurzweil 3000 window, which will provide details regarding your version, such as "Kurzweil 3000 Professional (Color), Version 11.05."
If you're using an English / US version of Kurzweil 3000, do not select any foreign language updates (e.g. French, Dutch, etc.) to download. If you install a foreign language update, it will turn your English menus into another language.
If you accidentally installed a foreign language patch and want to switch back to English menus, you will need download and install the applicable English patch on our website's Patches and Updates page.
Sometimes an organization's network firewall or proxy server will cause the auto-search in Kurzweil's built-in updater to fail and return an error. If this is the case, it is recommended that you download any available updates manually from our website's Patches and Updates page.
Tips for downloading and installing updates from our website
Close Kurzweil 3000 before attempting to run a manual update from our website.
If you are downloading and installing a patch from our website, do not attempt to install a patch for versions of Kurzweil 3000 you do not have installed. For example, if you have Kurzweil 3000 v10 installed, do not try to install any of the v11 patches. Doing so may break your installation of Kurzweil, refer to above information about checking your version.
Any patch for the actual Kurzweil 3000 program (referred to as the "client software") on the website may be applied to any installed version of Kurzweil 3000 as long as the version number matches. For example, if you have the Kurzweil 3000 v11 Standalone, Network, or Web License Client installed on your computer, any listed v11 patch for the client software may be applied to your installation, normally you want only the latest patch available for your version.
Currently we do not have installer patches available for the Kurzweil 3000 USB product. If you have a Kurzweil 3000 USB stick and are experiencing a malfunction, please contact our technical support department for further assistance.

Guide to updating / patching Kurzweil 3000
The KESI Virtual Printer is a print driver. Instead of printing a file, it creates a Kurzweil 3000 image file, or a "virtual" print, directly from other applications.
If you have an application on your system that displays and prints a file format that the Kurzweil 3000 does not support, then by using the Virtual Printer you may be able to open the file in Kurzweil 3000.
To use the KESI Virtual Printer, you must have on your system, an application that can open the source file, and that application has a Print function
Notes:
Use of the KESI Virtual Printer in Kurzweil 3000 USB Edition requires a separate installation using either the KESIVP-Installer (for 32-bit computers) or KESIVP64-Installer (for 64-bit computers). Both KESIVP installers are in the top level of the USB device folder. Also note that you must have Kurzweil 3000 USB launched to use the Virtual Printer.
For 64-bit operating systems, you must install the KESI Virtual Printer x64 file found on the product DVD under the Software folder, or from ftp://ftp.kurzweiledu.com/pub/x64/.
Kurzweil 3000 considers documents from the KESI Virtual Printer image files. If you want to keep the document in Kurzweil 3000, be sure to save it with the file extension .KES (Kurzweil).
If you want to use KESI Virtual Printer and have Internet Explorer in Protective Mode, you must first disable Protective Mode and Restart before using the Virtual Printer. When you are finished, re-enable Protective Mode and Restart.
The KESI Virtual Printer is an invaluable tool for quickly generating a Kurzweil image document from within another application, for example Microsoft Word, and then automatically opening within Kurzweil 3000.
To bring in an image document from another application:
Open the application. For example Microsoft Word.
Ensure that the application has a Print command.
Select KESI Virtual Printer from the Print Setup, Print Properties or Print Name list.
If your document contains color, and you want to reproduce it, click Properties or Printer Properties, click the Paper/Quality tab, and then select Color.
If you cannot access the Paper/Quality tab from your application, try using the procedure detailed in Reproducing Color in Documents Opened with the KESI Virtual Printer.
Click Print.
Kurzweil 3000 launches, if it isn't already running, and opens the file.
Save the document.
If you want to add Kurzweil 3000 features, such as annotations to the document, be sure to save it with the .kes extension.
Note:
You can also add or modify the default list of file types for the KESI Virtual Printer to tell Kurzweil 3000 what file types it can open.
By default, the KESI Virtual Printer creates documents in black and white, even when they contain color, however, you can set the KESI Virtual Printer to reproduce documents in color.
Note: If you are opening a PDF document with the Virtual Printer from Kurzweil 3000, the following procedure is required to reproduce color. However, if you are opening a document from its originating application, this procedure is not required as you should be able to choose color output at print time in the Properties dialog box available from the Print dialog box.
To set the Virtual Printer for color reproduction:
Open Printers and Faxes (Windows XP).
In the Control Panel, click the KESI Virtual Printer icon.
From the File menu, choose Properties.
In the Properties dialog box, click the Printing Preferences button.
In the Printing Preferences dialog box, click the Paper/Quality tab.
In the Color area, of the Paper/Quality tab page, choose Color, and click OK.
Click OK to close the Properties dialog box. Then close the Control Panel.
The KESI Virtual Printer is an invaluable tool for quickly generating a Kurzweil image document from within another application, for example Microsoft Word, and then automatically opening it into Kurzweil 3000.
If you cannot access the Paper/Quality tab from your application, try using the procedure detailed in Reproducting Color in Documents Opened with the Virtual Printer.
To use this feature, you must first install it from the KESIVP-Installer (for computers running 32-bit versions of Windows) or KESIVP64-Installer (for computers running 64-bit versions of Windows). Both installers are in the top level of the USB device folder. NOTE: You must have Kurzweil 3000 USB open to use the Virtual Printer.
Note: It may be possible to apply the below troubleshooting steps to legacy versions of Kurzweil 3000, such as v8 or below; however, success is not guaranteed or supported. If you are using an older version of Kurzweil 3000, it is always advised that you upgrade to the latest version. For details regarding an upgrade, please contact Kurzweil sales.
Note: Please review our Guide to updating / patching Kurzweil 3000 if you are unsure how to patch or update your Kurzweil product before proceeding.
These malfunctions are often caused by using incorrect settings in your KESI Virtual Printer Properties.
1. Verify your version of Kurzweil 3000 is updated.
2. Restart your computer to ensure that Kurzweil 3000 is closed and your KESI Virtual Printer job queue is cleared.
3. Access your KESI Virtual Printer Properties.
To do this, open your Printers and Faxes in your Windows Control Panel. You will see a list of printers. Double-click your KESI Virtual Printer. This will open a KESI Virtual Printer window. In this window, click Printer -> Properties. This will open your KESI Virtual Printer Properties window.
4. Verify / change your settings under the KESI Virtual Printer Properties so they are correct. Apply and OK the changes once your done. Refer to the below steps for more details..
Refer to the image KESI Virtual Printer Properties settings below for the correct settings you will need to use. If your settings are different, change them to those matching the image.
1) Sharing
Verify that "Do not share this printer" is marked.
2) Ports
You want to verify that your KESI Virtual Printer is assigned to a Local Port by itself. If this is not the case, you'll need to Add a new Local Port and assign the KESI Virtual Printer to that port:
- In the Ports tab, click "Add Port..." -> select Local Port on the list of Available port types -> click "New Port..." -> enter the port name "Kurzweil" (without the quotes) and click OK -> Close.
- In the Ports tab, verify that your Kurzweil Local Port is selected and click the Apply button to assign the KESI Virtual Printer to that port.
Also verify that "Enable printer pooling" is unchecked.
3) Advanced
Verify that "Always available" and "Print directly to the printer" are both marked.
4) Device Settings
Select "Application" in the settings tree -> click the "Setup..." button. Verify that "Kurzweil 3000" is your Default Application and Color Reduction is set to "Fast"
5. Launch Kurzweil 3000 and then minimize the program.
6. Launch a word processing program that has a Print function, such as Wordpad. In Wordpad (or another word processor), type out some random text. Print (Ctrl + P) your open document as a test, selecting your KESI Virtual Printer as your printer. Your document should print over to Kurzweil as an image.
Most likely you registered Kurzweil 3000 as the LearnStation version. LearnStations cannot use the KESI Virtual Printer and lose access to it.
You can verify which version of Kurzweil 3000 you have registered by clicking Help -> About Kurzweil 3000 from the Kurzweil menu.
No. However, Mac OS X has a built-in print as PDF function. This means you can always print as a PDF and then open that PDF file into a Professional version of Kurzweil 3000 for conversion.
You cannot virtually print to the virtual printer if you are already typing within Kurzweil. You have essentially skipped the Virtual Print process and typed straight into Kurzweil.
After you type your document out within your word process program, you can then either virtually print the doc and it will open with Kurzweil, or you can launch Kurzweil and open the doc by using the open doc feature within Kruzweil. Navigate to the document and open the doc.

This issue is often first noticed as missing foreign language voices or dictionaries in Kurzweil 3000. The reason why foreign language dictionaries are missing is because they are dependent on foreign voices being available within Kurzweil. The reason why foreign language voices are missing is because they run off of the ETI-Eloquence speech engine, which is failing to load.
The ETI-Eloquence is a SAPI4 Text-To-Speech (TTS) engine that is automatically installed as a component during Kurzweil 3000's installation. If the ETI-Eloquence speech engine is not properly initializing on launch of Kurzweil 3000 or SAPI4 functionality is not installed on your operating system, you will encounter this issue.
This phase only applies to installed versions of Kurzweil 3000 -- not the Kurzweil 3000 USB product.
1. If you are using Windows Vista or Windows 7, turn off UAC. After troubleshooting is complete, feel free to turn UAC back on.
2. Download and install the latest Kurzweil 3000 patch.
3. Launch Kurzweil 3000 -- and check if the voices are still missing. Exit Kurzweil after checking your voices. If you find that the ETI-Eloquence voices are now showing and will play, consider the issue resolved and do not continue with the below steps.
4. Run C:\Program Files\Kurzweil Educational Systems\Diags\SAPIReg.exe. If you have a 64-bit version of Windows, the path is C:\Program Files (x86)\Kurzweil Educational Systems\Diags\SAPIReg.exe. This will open a SAPI Registry Manager window.
5. In the SAPI Registry Manager window, select a speech engine in the top field and click the Remove button to move it to the Deleted field at the bottom. Do this for all speech engines listed *except* ETI-Eloquence6-mfW. You want ETI-Eloquence6-mfW to be the only speech engine at the top. Once you're done, click Save and then Exit. View the attached picture "SAPIReg example.JPG" as an example of what it should look with two speech engines. If ETI-Eloquence6-mfW is already at the top and there are no other speech engines listed, click Exit.
6. Launch Kurzweil 3000 -- and check if the voices are still missing. Exit Kurzweil after checking your voices. If you find that the ETI-Eloquence voices are now showing and will play, consider the issue resolved and do not continue with the below steps.
1. Download and install the SAPI 4 control panel applet from Microsoft.
2. Restart your computer.
3. Launch Kurzweil 3000 -- and check if the voices are still missing. Your ETI-Eloquence voices should now show in Kurzweil 3000 and play as normal.

When a user launches Kurzweil 3000, it hangs indefinitely at the splash screen. The splash screen is a window that reads "Now Loading Kurzweil 3000 Please Wait...". As such, the user is prevented from accessing the Kurzweil 3000 program.
The most common reason for this issue is that Kurzweil 3000 is failing to properly intialize one or more required speech engines on launch.
1. If you are using Windows Vista or Windows 7, turn off UAC. After troubleshooting is complete, feel free to turn UAC back on.
2. Download and install the latest Kurzweil 3000 patch.
3. Launch Kurzweil 3000 -- and wait to see if it hangs at the splash screen. If you load into the program, consider the issue resolved and do not continue with the below steps. If you're stuck at the splash screen, you will need to end the Kurzweil 3000.exe process in the Processes tab of your Windows Task Manager before proceeding.

When opening any imaged or scanned .kes file, including Kurzweil Sample Documents (located in C:\Program Files\Kurzweil Educational Systems\Kurzweil 3000\Sample Documents), no image will appear within Kurzweil. However, the text of the document can be read as normal using Kurzweil's Read function.
This problem may occur when using Kurzweil 3000 v11.03 on a Windows Vista or Windows 7 computer.
Note: The most recent Kurzweil 3000 v11 install CD and free trial download install v11.03 by default. In other words, if you recently received a new Kurzweil 3000 v11 CD or just downloaded the trial, you may encounter this problem after installation on Vista or Windows 7 if you haven't yet applied the latest Kurzweil 300 patch.
Download and install the Kurzweil 3000 v11.05 patch. Installing the patch will fix the problem.
Note: It may be advisable to right-click -> Run as Administrator the patch .exe installer to avoid possible permission issues with UAC on Vista and Windows 7.
You can also use Kurzweil's built-in updater to automatically download and install the patch. Read this guide for more details.

If SMART device drivers or software are installed on a computer with Kurzweil 3000, when the user exits Kurzweil 3000, he or she may receive a Windows error message "the program has stopped working and needs to close". The impact to Kurzweil 3000 functionality should be minimal, as Kurzweil was in the process of being closed anyways.
It is verified in the Windows Event Viewer that installed SMART software on Windows 7 64-bit computers causes this error.
This issue is resolved in the SMART Notebook software release version 10.8. Updating your SMART software to that version or greater should resolve the issue.

Problem:
If you have an older version of Kurzweil 3000 v13 installed (e.g. v13.03) and log into the software, you may be missing word lists (.kwl files). Doing this may also corrupt the word lists for that installation, preventing those word lists from automatically populating for future user profiles on that installation.
Logging into an older installation of the client may also corrupt the word lists tied to the settings of your Web Licensing firefly account, so if that account is used to log into an installation of the client that was conducted using newer media, you may still be missing word lists.
Installations from DVDs dated before Oct 2012 may be affected by this problem.
This issue will not occur if you install Kurzweil 3000 (K3000) from the latest build: www.kurzweiledu.com/installv13
Patching or updating your K3000 v13 installation to the latest version will mostly not resolve this issue.
Solution 1:
Backup any .kes files you want to keep. You can also save these files to your Universal Library.
Uninstall the corrupt installation of K3000 through Add/Remove Programs and remove leftover files that may affect this issue.
Delete all leftover systems files installed by the previous installation that were not deleted from the uninstall. These files can be found in:
C:\Program Files\Kurzweil Educational Systems
C:\Program Files (x86)\Kurzweil Educational Systems
Delete all leftover document files. These files can be found in:
Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\<computer username>\My Documents\KESI\Kurzweil 3000
Windows 7: C:\Users\<computer username>\Documents\KESI\Kurzweil 3000\
Download and install the latest version of K3000 v13 from here: www.kurzweiledu.com/installv13
If this does not fix the problem, you may have to create a new firefly account and log into the Kurzweil 3000 software with that.
Solution 2:
Do not perform installations from the DVD media. Instead, download the latest build for free from our website and install from that as noted above.
Solution 3:
Manually import the word lists files. This can be done through the Setup Word Lists... function within Kurzweil 3000.
You can download a .zip package of these files from: ftp://ftp.kurzweiledu.com/pub/Tech/Utilities/Kurzweil_3000/Win/Word_Lists/K3000%20v13%20word%20lists.zip
Alternatively, you can copy these word list files (.kwl) into the appropriate folder on your computer manually:
Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\<computer username>\My Documents\KESI\Kurzweil 3000\<K3000 username>\
Windows 7: C:\Users\<computer username>\Documents\KESI\Kurzweil 3000\<K3000 username>\

Notes:
The Kurzweil 3000 Network Engine (i.e. licensing server) is not officially supported to run on a virtual server.
There have been reports of customer's license files being corrupted when their Kurzweil 3000 Network Engine (Kurzweil licensing server) is hosted on a virtual server machine. However, we have not been able to internally reproduce this issue.
To avoid license corruption, make sure your virtual server is turned on at least 95% of the time and its real host has a backup power supply. Your virtual server will also need a static IP address.
An administrator is trying to install the licenses from the Kurzweil USB license keydisk to a Kurzweil Network Engine hosted on a virtual server. This virtual server has no direct access to a USB port.
1. Close out of the Kurzweil 3000 Network Administrator app running on the virtual server.
2. Install the Kurzweil 3000 Remote Administrator app (from the installation DVD) on a different, real computer with a USB port.
3. After installation, go through in-software registration chute to activate the new Remote Administrator app.
4. Place the USB keydisk into the real computer.
5. In the new Remote Administrator (which is essentially a second Kurzweil 3000 Network Administrator app), click Tools > Options. In the Options window, enter the IP address of the virtual server. This will point the active Kurzweil 3000 Network Administrator app to the Kurzweil 3000 Network Engine (i.e. licensing server) hosted on the virtual machine, and let you administrate it.
6. Restart the Kurzweil 3000 Network Administrator. In the Licenses menu, click on License Management... and follow the prompts to install licenses from the keydisk to the Network Engine.

What is the difference between "License-to-Go" and "Remote License-to-Go"?
License-to-Go's are granted to a computer that is temporarily connected to the network. For example, an administrator installs a regular Kurzweil 3000 Professional Color client on a laptop. From the Kurzweil 3000 Network Administrator program, the administrator chooses the particular student from active user list, and selects "Grant License-to-Go." The administrator then selects the amount of time the license will be checked out for. There will be one less available Professional Color license available on the server once the license is "checked out.
Issuing a License-to-Go would be similar to checking out a library book (a license) by going into library and speaking with a librarian. The book will be gone for as long as it was checked out, or until it's returned.
The Kurzweil 3000 Network version will come with a Remote Client install CD. This client is different from the regular Kurzweil 3000 client. The client does not have to be connected to the network, ever, to run. When you run a remote client for the first time it will give you a system code. The Admin then takes this system code and then generates a Remote License-to-Go Code by entering the System Code into the Network Administrator program. This Remote License-to-Go can be granted for a specified amount of time. The Administrator or client user, will then enter this remote code into the remote client window.
Using the above library book analogy, Issuing a Remote License-to-Go is like checking out a library book over the phone instead in-person, by giving a number and getting a number back. You will receive access to the book (license) as soon as it's checked out.
The Remote Client is used to generate a system code for a generated Remote License-To-Go code. To create a Remote License-to-Go code there are a few requirements:
1. You will need the clients System Code (When attempting to start the remote client they will get an overlay with a System Code).
2. You will need the clients system Time Zone, and Regional Settings (should be set to United States).
3. On the Network Administrator system, set the Time Zone to the same as the Client Machine.
4. Open the Kurzweil Network Administrator and go to Licenses > Generate Remote License-to-Go.
5. Enter the Clients System Code in the appropriate field and set the appropriate lease time. A code will be generated.
6. Enter the generated code into the clients window

Using the Kurzweil 3000 Network Administrator to issue a License-to-Go to a limited user account will result in a 102 Error (the license-to-go could not be validated, perhaps because you are a limited user).
The Kurzweil 3000 Network License-to-Go and Remote License-to-Go both require that the client be used by an account with local administrator access. If you receive the above error, you'll need to ensure that the account has local administrator access to the machine.
If the account has local administrator access and is running on Windows Vista or Windows 7, the issue may be related to User Account Control. On the client machine navigate to this location: C:\Program Files\Kurzweil Educational Systems\Kurzweil 3000. Right click on the kurzweil 3000.exe and "run as administrator". After the Kurzweil client launches, try to issue a License-to-Go to this client and it should take.
Note: Our development team is aware that customers would like to be able to use the License-to-Go and Remote License-to-Go features with limited user accounts. This is currently an issue under investigation.

Early adopters of Kurzweil 3000 Web License (Win) v13 and (Mac) v5 with firefly may have purchased a User Pack implementation. The top level coordinator account wthin firefly of a User Pack implementation does not have administrative access to user accounts underneath it. Additionally, the user pools and licenses within each User Pack have to be managed separately.
For example, if you purchased two 30-User Packs, you may have received 3 different emails containing usernames and passwords for firefly -- one for the top level coordinator account and one for each sub-coordinator account of each User Pack.
We have since discontinued User Pack implementations. If you have an implementation that consists of User Packs and would like to "merge" your User Packs so all licenses and users can be managed under a single top level coordinator account, please submit a request to technical support.
Last Updated: September 2012
Applies to Versions: Kurzweil 3000 Web License (Win) v13; Kurzweil 3000 Web License (Mac) v5; firefly
Kurzweil 3000 Web License (Win) v13 and (Mac) v5 use firefly as a user and cloud (Universal Library) management tool. As the top level coordinator on a firefly account, you can set up teacher accounts and allocate those teacher accounts licenses. Those teacher accounts can then be used to create student accounts underneath them, permitting the teacher accounts have enough allocated licenses. Each user account created within firefly takes up a license.
When structuring a user tree (i.e. teachers and students underneath those teachers), keep the following in mind:
- The top level coordinator account can only administrate the level of users directly beneath it and a teacher account can only administrate the level of users directly beneath it. For example, if you had a top level coordinator account with a teacher set up underneath and students account set up underneath that teacher account, then the top level coordinator could not see or administrate those student accounts.
- A student account can only exist under a single teacher account at once. If a student has multiple teachers that use Kurzweil 3000 or firefly, then it's suggested that your staff share a single administrative teacher account instead of creating a duplicate account for the student underneath another teacher account.
- A single student with multiple accounts will have multiple usernames and passwords and separate locations in the cloud to save files to; as such, it's important to avoid this type of setup. It's important to structure your user tree in a way that a student only has a single account.
- Licensing is based off the amount of active user accounts created within firefly. Per the license agreement, each student that uses the system should have his or her own account, but it is recommended for staff (teachers, coaches, aids, etc.) to share accounts. Licensing is not based on concurrent usage.
Please view the attached document that illustrates user access levels and how to plan your user tree to best fit your implementation's needs.
Notes:
firefly is an evolving system. User access levels, vertical visibility, administrative access, and how student accounts function is subject to change. Our development team is looking to improve the system based on your feedback.

General connection information
What if my network is implementing a proxy server?
Guide to updating / patching Kurzweil 3000
Kurzweil 3000 V13 Web License / firefly
Kurzweil 3000 V5 Web License / firefly
In order to login to the Kurzweil 3000 Web License client or the firefly website you must have internet access to connect; an active connection for the product(s) to continue to function is required. The connection is encrypted and maintains itself automatically.
1. All options available in the software except the menu option "Save" and "Exit" will become unavailable within the Kurzweil 3000 menus. Toolbars also become unavailable, except for being able to save.
2. A message window pops up notifying the user of the disconnection and to save their work. If you are not getting a message please make sure your version is up to date.
No, there is not. If the first access check fails, the information above this entry would apply. You must keep an active Internet connection while using the Kurzweil 3000 Web License or firefly product in order for it to continue to function properly after logging in.
The software library Kurzweil 3000 software uses to detect Internet connectivity is not proxy aware. Kurzweil 3000's web licensing authentication will not function through a proxy server, resulting users not being able to log in to the software. The solution is to make a handling exception in the proxy server's settings, so the proxy does not handle any traffic to/from our service addresses, forcing such traffic over a direct Internet connection.
This page has instructions detailing how to add exceptions to proxy settings:
It's also important to note that your web browser proxy settings for Internet Explorer (Win) and Safari (Mac) on the client need to have proper web access for Kurzweil 3000 Web License client to function.
Microsoft ISA
Microsoft ISA is one of the more common proxy server solutions.

It's important for a teacher to have a class, due to students being required to be in a class in order to login to the Kurzweil 3000 Version 12 Web License Edition client.
Having students in classes also is beneficial to the usage reports available. In addition, teachers that have classes can make use of the assignments system in the Kurzweil Web License software.
Once again, it is required to have at least one teacher and one class in order for students to be added to the system.
If you do not wish to create individual classes for all your teachers, you may instead create one generic teacher account and have multiple teachers use the same account, sharing the students/classes that teacher is assigned to. The main drawbacks are: The student roster will be shared, teachers will not each have a personal web folder for file storage; instead it will be shared. Another possible difficulty would be that it may be harder to manage the students in this large class implementation, if it is not segregated into multiple classes. *There may be a further future impact(s) if new reporting features are implemented.
A generic account is simply a "Shared" account you create with a username and password that is meant for multiple users, an example username would be something like "K3000teacher", or "K3000teacher01". Every user created in VPORT is a "Multi-login" user, meaning that as long as there are available licenses, the same account may login to VPORT or Kurzweil 3000 multiple times.
1. Using the drop-down in the top right select the school in question.
2. Click the "My School" tab on this page, select "Add" next to the "Add Teachers and Classes" option.
3. Locate the teacher in the list, and click the "Add Class" button on the right side of the page for that teacher.
4. Click "Save Changes" on the top or bottom of this page.
1. Click the "My School" tab on this page, select "Add" next to the "Add Teachers and Classes" option.
2. Locate the teacher in the list, and click the "Add Class" button on the right side of the page for the teacher.
3. Click "Save Changes" on the top or bottom of this page.

To add a student, you must first login to VPORT. There are two options available for adding students; those being: Adding students to VPORT manually or importing students from the supplied template. All user types besides student accounts may add student users to VPORT. Continue reading for more details on this process.
If you do not wish to create individual accounts for all your students, you may instead create one generic account and have multiple students use the same account. This type of account can also be called a "Guest Account". The main drawback to this is that you will not have accurate usage reports at the individual level.
A generic account is simply a "fake" account you create with a username and password that is meant for multiple users, an example username would be something like "K3000testuser", or "K3000student01". Every user created in VPORT is a "Multi-login" user, meaning that as long as there are available licenses, the same account may login multiple times.
If you only have a few students to add to the system, this is often the best method.
*Note: To add students with this method there must first be a class in place attached to a teacher account, classes are added by a school or district VPORT user. If you do not yet have a class in the system, please refer to article 6.3. Guide to creating classes in VPORT for assistance in creating classes.
You must fill out all required fields when adding students, these being:
Last Name
First Name
ID: The ID is a number you assign to the student, this is normally a student ID number but it does not have to be. Every student requires their own unique ID.
With above required fields in mind, once logged in with your VPORT account, please follow the steps below to add a student account.
1. In the top right hand corner, navigate via the drop-down for "School" to verify the school you are interested in adding a student to.
2. Click the drop-down for "Class" and select the class you are interested in for the school in question. *If the "Class" drop-down is not selectable, displaying as "All" and appearing to be grayed out : Please refer to article 6.3. Guide to creating classes in VPORT for further assistance.
3. Click the "Add Students" button. This should be located on the "My Class > Roster" page, you should be on this page now, following above steps.
4. Type the student's last name, first name, and ID.
5. Click on "Save Changes" when done.
6. The usernames and passwords for students that have been created will appear on the "My Class" > "Roster" sub-menu for the school and class selected. If it does not update immediately, please refresh the page.
1. Navigate to the "My Class" tab.
2. Click the "Add New Students" button.
3. Type the student's last name, first name, and ID.
4. Click on "Save Changes" when done.
5. The usernames and passwords for students that have been created will appear on the "My Class" > "Roster" sub-menu. If it does not update immediately, please refresh the page.
This option allows you to upload a large list of students at one time, through a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet. Teacher,School, and District accounts may perform this action. A template is provided for you to be able to do this easily from within VPORT. Please see below for more details on this process.
1. Navigate to the "Import Students" sub-menu from the "My District" or "My School" tab. You my also click "Import" from the landing page next to "Add Students".
2. Click "Download Template" on the desired import option, Microsoft Excel will open.

If your organization purchased the product from us, you should have received the following:
If you did not receive the install media or email with your admin login info, please contact customer service.
1. Insert the Web License Administrator CD, then find and double-click the WebLicAdmin.exe file to run the installer. Follow the prompts to install the program.
2. If your computer does not have an updated version of .NET, this installer should detect this and attempt to install .NET.
The CLT Web Licensing Site Administrator program should be installed on any Windows computers of staff members that you want to give the ability to create and manage Web Licensing users. These computers will need to have 1) an active Internet connection and 2) an updated version of Microsoft .NET Framework in order to use the program.
The bandwidth required is equivalent to accessing a web page that does not contain streaming video or sound. It's a program that simply connects to our web service and lets you create and manage users for your K3000 Web Licenses. Dial-up connections are not supported.
The version of the CLT Web Licensing Site Administrator that's installed from your CD may be out of date. You can find out what version of the CLT Web License Administrator you have by:
1. Run the program.
2. Log in with your admin site name, user name, and password (see Step 1 above for where to get this info).
3. Once logged in, click on Help -> About on the top menu.
4. If you Version is 1.1 or below, then you may consider updating it to fix some performance issues.
1. You can download the latest version of the CLT Web Licensing Site Administrator here: ftp://ftp.kurzweiledu.com/pub/Tech/Utilities/Kurzweil_3000/Win/K3000_WL/V11/WebLicAdmin_v11.exe
2. Save the .zip file to your desktop.
3. Make sure you have the latest version of Microsoft .NET Framework installed on your computer, as this updated version does not try to install .NET like the installer on CD.
4. Uninstall your old CLT Web License Administrator: In your Window's Control Panel, go to Add / Remove Programs. In your list of currently installed programs and updates, select "CLT Web License Administrator" and click the "Remove" button. Follow any prompts to complete the uninstall process.
5. Open the .zip file saved on your desktop in Step 1. Inside you'll find a WebLicAdmin.exe file. Unzip that file to your desktop. Simply run the WebLicAdmin.exe from your desktop.
6. There is no installation process.
7. Log in with the same admin site name, user name, and password you've used before.
Now that you have the CLT Web Licensing Site Administrator program installed, you'll want to log in and set up your users before you install the actual Kurzweil 3000 software. For more information regarding this process, read starting at page 4 of the attached document "Official K3000 Web License Installation & Users Guide.pdf".
The Kurzweil 3000 Web License Client is the actual Kurzweil 3000 software program that your students will use. You may install the Client on as many machines as you like, as your simultaneously active users are limited to the number of licenses you have. For example, you could install the Client on 100 different computers, but if you only have 10 licenses, then only 10 people can be using Kurzweil 3000 at once.
For more details on the Client installation process, read page 2 of the attached document "Official K3000 Web License Installation & Users Guide.pdf".
At the end of the Kurzweil 3000 Client installation process, you will be prompted to enter your site name. If you fail to enter your site name, or enter your site name incorrectly, users will not be able to log into that installation of the Kurzweil 3000 Client software, receiving an "invalid customer name" error.
If you made a mistake when entering your site name at the end of the installation process, you can fix it by following the below steps:
1. Download the attached "WebLicSiteName_32&64bit.zip" file to your desktop.
2. Open the .zip file saved on your desktop in Step 1. Inside you'll find an "WebLicSiteName_32&64bit.exe" file. Unzip that file to your desktop.
3. Run the "WebLicSiteName_32&64bit.exe" from your desktop.
4. In the "Kurzweil 3000 Web Lic Site Name Utility" window that appears, type your site name into the "Enter Site Name" field and click OK.
5. This will set your Kurzweil 3000 Client installation to the new site name entered.
After you have a) installed the Kurzweil 3000 Web License Client and b) successfully logged into Kurzweil 3000 to test your installation, then you can c) consider installing the additional VoiceText and RealSpeak voices that come with Kurzweil 3000.
To install the additional voices, insert your VoiceText NeoSpeech or RealSpeak Spanish Voices CD into your computer and run the setup.exe file off the CD. If you have auto-run turned on, the setup.exe should run automatically. Follow the prompts during the installation process. Install one CD at a time.
It installs a slightly better quality version of the VW Kate and VW Paul (English) voices that already exist within Kurzweil 3000 v11.
It installs two additional high quality RealSpeak Spanish voices for use within Kurzweil 3000.

A teacher is missing his or her Assignments menu and/or button within the Kurzweil 3000 Web License Client software.
This will affect teachers that log into the Kurzweil 3000 Web License Client without having an assigned class in VPORT first.
To avoid this issue, before that teacher logs into the Kurzweil 3000 Web License Client with their VPORT login, create a class for the teacher within VPORT.
Below are the troubleshooting steps if a teacher account is currently being affected by this issue.
1. Log into VPORT with the affected teacher account or an administration-level account (Principal, Coordinator, etc.).
2. Within VPORT, create/add a class for the teacher. It is not required that this class have assigned students. Save the changes within VPORT.
3. Log into the Kurzweil 3000 Web License Client software with the teacher account. You will notice that the Assignments option on the menu is now available but the Assignments button is still missing.
4. Right-click on an open area of the red toolbar and choose "Customize Toolbars" from the context menu.
5. Double-click on the Assignments button in the inactive buttons section.
6. Apply, OK
7. You should now see the assignments button on your main red toolbar
Our development team is aware of this issue and is investigating a solution.

Is there a limit to web-based storage for Kurzweil 3000 v13 Web Licensing with firefly?
There is no limit set at this time.
Are there any plans to implement a storage limit for firefly in the future?
There are no plans at this time.
What's the difference between the web-based storage within the firefly website and the Universal Library that the Kurzweil 3000 software client connects to?
The Universal Library and the web-based storage system of firefly are one in the same.
What is a firefly Coordinator Account?
A Coordinator account is a shared staff account that can be used by all staff at a specific site or school. Coordinator accounts can be used to login to firefly and can be used to login to Kurzweil 3000 v13/v5 WL. The Coordinator Account acts as a container for student accounts. Student accounts are grouped under the Coordinator Accounts. A staff member logged into firefly can administer any student account inside its container, or underneath it in the hierarchical tree.
When should you consider creating a firefly Coordinator Account?
You should only consider a Coordinator Account if your implementation consists of multiple sites or schools. If your implementation consists of just a single site or school, we recommend sharing your top level Coordinator Account with your staff members and creating student accounts directly underneath it.
How do you create a Coordinator Account in firefly?
Login to firefly using your top level Coordinator Account by going to this link: https://accounts.fireflybykurzweil.com/
Coordinator Accounts are created and managed on the Users page, just like student accounts.
A step-by-step video of this process can be viewed here: http://www.fireflybykurzweil.com/help.html
Step 1: Creating the Coordinator Account
1. Click the Users page to navigate to the Manage User Information page.
2. Click the Add Multiple Users drop down menu and select how many Coordinators need to be added. In this example we are going to leave it at the default 1.
3. Fill out the row for the new Coordinator Account (all fields are required):
4. Click the Add New button to create this new Coordinator Account. You should now see the new Coordinator Account under the list of Allocated Users.
Step 2: Allocate account licenses for the new Coordinator Account
1. Change the license count in the allocated license column to the amount of licenses needed to be allocated. Keep in mind, one license will be taken up by the Coordinator Account.
2. Click the check box next to the name of the new Coordinator Account that is being edited.
3. Change the Select Action box to Save Edits.
4. Click the Perform Action button to save the changes.

Note: If you are using a Kurzweil 1000 or a Professional version of Kurzweil 3000, you can scan images directly into Kurzweil. For this, you will need to use a scanner that is compatible with your version of Kurzweil. To determine if your scanner is compatible, read below.
Note: If you already have a working scanner and want to test its compatibility, the easiest way is to order a free Trial Edition of Kurzweil and install it.
Note: If your scanner is not compatible with Kurzweil, you can always scan in images as .pdf or .tif files using your scanner's bundled software, and then open those images inside Kurzweil 1000 or a Professional version of Kurzweil 3000 for automatic conversion to a Kurzweil file type (.kes).
Note: Before attempting troubleshooting, it is good practice to make sure you have the latest update/patch for Kurzweil 3000. Click here for more details.
Note: Kurzweil 3000 v4.5 Web License Edition (Mac), Kurzweil 3000 v5 (Mac), Kurzweil 3000 v12 Web License Edition (Win), and Kurzweil 3000 v13 (Win) all come standard as Color Professional scanning versions.
Kurzweil 3000 for Windows (Professional Color or Black & White) is designed to work with scanners that use a TWAIN driver for your Windows operating system. For example, if Windows 7 Professional 64-bit is your operating system and you want to use a scanner that is compatible with Kurzweil 3000, then you will need a scanner that uses a TWAIN driver made for Windows 7 Professional 64-bit.
The vast majority of scanners use TWAIN drivers, but to ensure compatibility with Kurzweil and your operating system you should always check with the manufacturer first. To ensure performance, we also recommend the use of standalone scanners and not printer-fax combination devices.
Kurzweil 1000 has identical compatibility requirements as Kurzweil 3000 for Windows.
Kurzweil 3000 for Macintosh (Professional Color or Black & White) is designed to work with scanners that interface with Mac OS X's built-in Image Capture application using Image Capture drivers. Scanners that only use TWAIN drivers will not work with Kurzweil 3000 for Macintosh.
Scanners with Macintosh Image Capture drivers can be harder to find than those made with only TWAIN drivers. It is recommended that you verify with the manufacturer first if a prospective scanner uses Image Capture drivers. To ensure performance, we also recommend the use of standalone scanners and not printer-fax combination devices.
If a user has difficulty using a computer, scanning with a separate program and then opening the image file into Kurzweil for conversion can be quite a difficult process. For such a user, it is helpful to give them the ability to scan pages from the scanner directly into Kurzweil as a .kes file by simply clicking a prominent button on the Kurzweil menu.
From a technical perspective, images scanned directly into Kurzweil may benefit from Kurzweil's scanning capabilities (deskew, auto-alignment, etc.). Some scanner software may not have Kurzweil's scanning capabilities.
In environments where individual users are not responsible for scanning their own materials, the logistical and administrative advantages of scanning directly into Kurzweil are not as significant. Scanning as a .pdf file first may provide a handy source file, as a .pdf scan of a book or document could potentially have many uses outside of Kurzweil.
No. The LearnStation version of Kurzweil 3000 cannot perform the following functions of the Professional versions:
Even if a scanner is compatibile that does not 100% guarantee it will work, which is why we recommend testing out scanner compatibility first with a free trial of Kurzweil.
If you scan in, convert, or virtual print a colored image using Kurzweil 3000 Professional (Black & White), it will automatically grayscale the result within Kurzweil. Kurzweil 3000 Professional (Color) will not do this and retain image color.
If a scanner does not have a TWAIN series driver for Windows, you will not be able to scan directly into Kurzweil.
If a scanner does not have an Image Capture driver for Mac, you will not be able to scan directly into Kurzweil. Can your company recommend a specific scanner model for use with Kurzweil 1000 or 3000?
We currently cannot provide scanner model recommendations. This may change in the future.
1. Your scanner will not work inside of Kurzweil if it's not properly installed or functioning with your computer's operating system. Verify that the scanner works in Windows by using your Fax and Scan Scanner Wizard. If you're using a Macintosh, verify that you can scan using your Macintosh's built-in Image Capture application. Also test your scanner with any bundled scanning software from the manufacturer. If your scanner is malfunctioning outside of Kurzweil, please contact your scanner manufacturer for technical support.
2. If possible, download and install the latest drivers for your scanner. Updating or reinstalling your scanner drivers will often fix scanning problems.
3. If your scanner is only malfunctioning within Kurzweil, please contact our technical support department. We may be able to modify settings for its TWAIN driver, improving how it interfaces with Kurzweil. Although this troubleshooting process usually results in success, it is not 100% guaranteed to work.
Before you attempt any troubleshooting steps or contact us for technical support, it's always a good idea to make sure your version of Kurzweil 3000 is updated. A troubleshooting solution may not work if you're using an outdated version. Often you may find that simply updating Kurzweil (i.e. patching) will automatically fix your problem.
The most simple way to update Kurzweil is through its built-in updater: on the Kurzweil 3000 menu click Online -> Updates... and follow the prompts to download and install the latest update (i.e. patch) found by the auto-search.

Use the default settings in the Scanner Configuration window for this driver (i.e. don't change anything). Click Done to close out of the Scanner Configuration window.
8. In Kurzweil 3000, click on Scan -> Scanner Setup -> Select Scanner... and choose the HP ScanJet Scanner (TWAIN) scanner driver (aka the Alternative Minimum TWAIN driver) from the drop-down list (it should be the only scanner listed). This should initialize the scanner driver and prepare it for scanning.
9. Put a couple pieces of paper in the scanner that has text on both sides. In the Kurzweil 3000 menu, click Scan
10. Once you start scanning, a box will come up with prompting you to choose single- or double-sided. If you choose double-sided, then the scanner will duplex even if double-sided scanning is not used in the K3000 menu. If you choose single-sided, single sided scanning will work as normal in K3000. If the uses marks double-sided in the K3000 menu, then the pages must be flipped over after a paper stack is scanned to scan the opposite sides -- the duplex mechanism will not be used in the scanner.

User receives error: "hpqscnvw has stopped working" when attempting to scan with an HP All in one Scanner with Kurzweil with Windows Vista on Tablet PC's.
Details:
This is a Windows Vista and HP all in one scanner driver on a "Tablet" or "Touch" PC conflict. This error appears when scanning is attempted. This is a Microsoft error before any Kurzweil errors. To verify this is the actual issue you can disable the Tablet PC Service and try to scan again. *This disables the touch screen.
