1.3. Problems accessing Bookshare from K3000 or firefly

Last updated: August 2016

General Info:

Within the Kurzweil 3000 software, you can search online for books, magazines and other sources. This feature can be access via Online > Search for Books

Within firefly, you have the ability to search for and open books directly from Bookshare.org. This feature can be accessed from your Universal Library page by clicking on the Open from Bookshare button.

If you have a organizational Bookshare.org account (as opposed to an individual access student account), you currently do not have the ability to search for and open books from Bookshare using the Open from Bookshare button in firefly. Our engineers are looking at implementing organizational Bookshare access for firefly in the future.

This limitation does not apply to newer versions of the Kurzweil 3000 (K3000) software, so you can use your organizational Bookshare account within the K3000 software. If you're using the Web License version of K3000, you can then save that book to your Universal Library and then access it in firefly.

Kurzweil 3000 v12 or older:

Due to changes in Bookshare.org's architecture and application interface, versions of K3000 older than 13 may have difficulties accessing Bookshare. In these older versions of K3000, organizational Bookshare accounts may also not have access to download books.

If you're having difficulties accessing Bookshare through an older version of K3000, we recommend upgrading to the latest version of Kurzweil 30000. Please contact your sales representative.

Kurzweil 3000 v11:

We no longer provide support for Kurzweil 3000 v11, but if you're having difficulties accessing Bookshare through the K3000 software you can try to download and install the version 11 specific Bookshare patch available here: https://www.kurzweiledu.com/news-resources/software-updates/ki-1000-version11-updates.html

This should not be considered a guaranteed fix, but it is something you can attempt. We recommended upgrading Kurzweil 3000.

Kurzweil 3000 v13 or later:

If you're having difficulties accessing or downloading books through Bookshare using K3000 v13 or later, make sure you download and install the latest update/patch for K3000. Patching should fix the issue.

Updates/Patches are available for download here: https://www.kurzweiledu.com/news-resources/software-updates.html

You can also search for updates/patches within K3000 via Online > Updates...

Workaround Solution:

Download the book from Bookshare as a DAISY file package, in .zip file format.

If using Kurzweil 3000 v13 or v14 (make sure to update/patch):  Do not open or unzip the .zip file.  Rename the file extension .zip to .bks (e.g. harrypotter.zip should be renamed to harrypotter.bks) and open the .bks in Kurzweil 3000 v14 or later.

If using Kurzweil 3000 v12 or older: Unzip the .zip file. Find the .opf file and open it directly in Kurzweil 3000.
