1.1. Read the Web, how to enable and fix (Chrome/Firefox)

UPDATE: We have a new Google Chrome and Firefox add-on for Read the Web, version 3.0. Please note that Read the Web 3.0 is available for all K3000+firefly customers if their device meets the requirements. For the Standalone and Network editions of the product, we have also added support for the newest version of v15 for Windows. The Mac version of the new add-on currently only works with the Web license edition of the product.

Requirements:


Installing Read The Web 3.0 for Chrome:

  1. Go to this link in Chrome OR search the Chrome store for Kurzweil, then add the "Read the Web" add-on.
  2. Restart Chrome after the Read the Web add-on is installed.
  3. When you next go to a website, you should be prompted to login to the Chrome Read the Web add-on in the top right-hand corner of your screen.
  4. Login with your firefly username/password.
  5. Click on the play button to start reading content on the website you are on. It may be a good idea to select the text you want to read first or to place your cursor before the section you want to read.

Installing Read The Web 3.0 for Firefox:

  1. Go to this link in the Firefox Browser.
  2. Click "Allow" to download the add-on.
  3. Click "Install" to install the add-on.
  4. When you next go to a website, you should be prompted to log into the Firefox Read Web add-on in the top right-hand corner of your screen.
  5. Log in with your firefly username/password.
  6. Click on the play button to start reading content on the website you are on. It may be a good idea to select the text you want to read first or to place your cursor before the section you want to read.


Read the Web 2.0

This version is best used if you are not using a version of Kurzweil that supports the newer Read the Web 3.0

Read the Web 2.0 add-on with Firefox (Windows/Mac)

Firefox add-on Requirements:

Depending on your version of Kurzweil 3000 (K3000), OS and Firefox, the Read the Web add-on provided by Kurzweil 3000 may not function properly. In some cases, you may have to upgrade to the latest version of K3000.

Read the Web 2.0 Windows Troubleshooting:

If you're having problems with Read the Web for Windows, following the below instructions should fix the issue.

1. Uninstall the old KESI Reader add-on in Firefox. If the old add-on isn't installed, then you don't need to do this step.
- In Firefox, you can do this by clicking on your Open Menu button > Add-ons > Extensions > find the KESI Reader extension and click on Remove > follow the prompts to uninstall the add-on.

2. Make sure you've updated/patched K3000 to the latest version. If you're running an older version of K3000, you may run into problems. You can download the latest patches for your version here: https://www.kurzweiledu.com/news-resources/software-updates.html

3. Using Firefox, click the following link depending on your version of Kurzweil:

K3000 v15: https://www.kurzweiledu.com/downloads/currentversion/KESIReader_239.xpi

K3000 v14 and older: https://www.kurzweiledu.com/downloads/currentversion/KESIReader.xpi

- This will start an installation of the add-on. Follow the prompts to install the add-on.

 

Optional Additional Windows Steps for Read the Web 2.0 (This will allow installing the updated add-on directly through Kurzweil):

4. Right-click > Save Link As... the following link:

K3000 v15:https://www.kurzweiledu.com/downloads/currentversion/KESIReader_239.xpi

K3000 v14 and older: https://www.kurzweiledu.com/downloads/currentversion/KESIReader.xpi
- Save the downloaded file to C:\Program Files (x86)\Kurzweil Educational Systems\Common Files\
- There will be an existing kesireader.xpi file already in the Common Files folder
- Choose to Replace the existing file with the KESIReader.xpi file you're saving there

Notes:

Older versions of K3000 for Windows (version 12 and below) may not function with Read the Web using newer versions of Firefox. We do not support Read the Web in these older versions of K3000. You will need to speak to your Sales representative regarding upgrading.

Read the Web 2.0 Macintosh Troubleshooting:

If you're having problems with Read the Web for Mac, following the below instructions should fix the issue.

1. Uninstall the old KESI Reader add-on in Firefox. If the old add-on isn't installed, then you don't need to do this step.
- In Firefox, you can do this by clicking on your Open Menu button > Add-ons > Extensions > find the KESI Reader extension and click on Remove > follow the prompts to uninstall the add-on.

Notes:

Older versions of K3000 for Mac (version 5 and below) may not function with Read the Web using newer versions of Firefox and Mac OSX. We do not support Read the Web these older versions of K3000. You will need to speak to your Sales representative regarding upgrading.
