1.1. Read the Web, installation and troubleshooting (Chrome/Firefox)

If you're having problems figuring out how to install or get Read the Web to work, this article is meant to help you.

Important:

Read the Web may not work if your version of Kurzweil 3000 (K3000) is not patched or updated. For example, if you have K3000 version 15.01, there is a patch that will update you to version 15.13 (or later). You can view available patches for K3000 here: https://www.kurzweiledu.com/news-resources/software-updates.html

Do not try to install a patch for a version you do not own. For example, if you have K3000 version 14, don't try to install the version 15.13 patch.

Current Versions of Kurzweil 3000

Currently K3000 v15 is the latest version. If your version of K3000 is current, you can use the latest Read the Web extensions. These Read the Web extensions have added functionality and usability.

Does the latest version of Read the Web (for Chrome/Firefox) work with all editions and platforms?

The latest version of Read the Web works with the following versions and editions of K3000:

K3000 v15 Web License, for both Mac and Windows
— K3000 v15 Standalone, Windows-only
 K3000 v15 Network, Windows-only

New Read the Web support is currently planned for K3000 Standalone for Mac, but it is not yet available and we do not have an ETA.

Chrome

Instructions:

  1. You can download and install the Read the Web extension from the Chrome webstore here: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/read-the-web/hdgegmlancchhhlkkddoiedlklgocffm 
  2. Follow the prompts to install the extension.
  3. After the extension is installed, restart Chrome.
  4. You'll notice a color square icon button near the top-right of your web browser. You can click on that button to expand the overlay.
  5. Within the overlay, it may require you to enter your firefly username and password to log into the Read the Web add-on.
  6. Click the play button to start reading content on a web page. It may be a good idea to select text you want to read first, or place your cursor at a location on the page before you start to read.

Firefox

Instructions:

  1. You can download the Read the Web extension for Firefox here:  https://www.kurzweiledu.com/downloads/currentversion/firefox-addons/readtheweb_3_1_14.xpi
  2. If you're in Firefox, you can simply Open the .xpi file from the above link. If you download the file using another web browser, you can drag the .xpi file into an open Firefox window to start the installation.
  3. Follow the prompts to install the extension.

Old Versions of Kurzweil 3000

If your version of K3000 is not current, you may not be able to utilize the current versions of Read the Web. If you need help installing Read the Web for an older version of K3000 follow the below instructions.

Important:

Firefox:

Instructions:

  1. You can download the Read the Web extension for Firefox and K3000 v15 here: https://www.kurzweiledu.com/downloads/currentversion/KESIReader_239.xpi 
  2. You can download the Read the Web extension for Firefox and K3000 v14 or older here: https://www.kurzweiledu.com/downloads/currentversion/KESIReader.xpi
  3. If you're in Firefox, you can simply Open the .xpi file from the above link. If you download the file using another web browser, you can drag the .xpi file into an open Firefox window to start the installation.
  4. Follow the prompts to install the extension.
  5. After it's installed, restart Firefox.

Windows Troubleshooting:

If you're having problems with Read the Web in Firefox on a Windows computer, follow the below instructions to fix it.

Instructions:

  1. Read the Important section above regarding patching K3000.
  2. If you have an old KESI Reader extension installed in Firefox, make sure to uninstall it. In Firefox, you can do this by clicking on your Open Menu button > Add-ons > Extensions > find the KESI Reader extension and click on Remove > follow the prompts to uninstall the extension.
  3. Download the appropriate Read the Web extension linked above in the Firefox section. Rename the file KESIReader.xpi.
  4. Copy the new KESIReader.xpi file that you downloaded above.
  5. In Windows, navigate to your C:\Program Files (x86)\Kurzweil Educational Systems\Common Files\ folder.
  6. Inside the Common Files folder, you'll see an old kesireader.xpi file. Paste your new KESIReader.xpi into the folder, and choose to Replace the old file with the new one.
  7. Drag the new KESIReader.xpi file into an open Firefox window and follow the prompts to install the new extension.

Mac Troubleshooting:

If you're having problems with Read the Web in Firefox on a Mac computer, follow the below instructions to fix it.

Instructions:

  1. Read the Important section above regarding patching K3000.
  2. If you have an old KESI Reader extension installed in Firefox, make sure to uninstall it. In Firefox, you can do this by clicking on your Open Menu button > Add-ons > Extensions > find the KESI Reader extension and click on Remove > follow the prompts to uninstall the extension.
  3. Follow the instructions in the above Firefox section.

Internet Explorer:

The Read the Web extension for Internet Explorer lacks functionality compared to Read the Web for Firefox and Chrome. If you're having problems with it, we suggest you switch to using Read the Web for Firefox or Chrome.
