General Information:

Is internet access required for the Kurzweil 3000 Web License client / firefly?

In most cases, order to login to the Kurzweil 3000 Web License client or the firefly website or iPad application, you must have internet access to connect; an active connection for the product(s) to continue to function is required. The connection is encrypted and maintains itself automatically after the initial login process.

If you have access to the Kurzweil 3000 v15 Web Licence however, it is now possible to enable an offline mode. More information on this is available here.

What happens if Internet access is lost?

1. All options available in the software except the menu option "Save" and "Exit" will become unavailable within the Kurzweil 3000 menus. Toolbars also become unavailable, except for being able to save.

2. A message window pops up notifying the user of the disconnection and to save their work. If you are not getting a message please make sure your version is up to date.

Is there a redundant access check, after the first connection failure?

Not at this time. If the first access check fails, the information above this entry would apply. You must keep an active Internet connection while using the Kurzweil 3000 Web License or firefly product in order for it to continue to function properly after logging in. The only exception to this is if you are in Offline Mode, which is an option in Kurzweil 3000 v15 or higher Web Licencing for Windows, more information on that here.

What if my network is implementing a proxy server?

The software library Kurzweil 3000 software uses to detect Internet connectivity is not proxy aware. Kurzweil 3000's web licensing authentication will not function through a proxy server, resulting users not being able to log in to the software. The solution is to make a handling exception in the proxy server's settings, so the proxy does not handle any traffic to/from our service addresses, forcing such traffic over a direct Internet connection.

This page has instructions detailing how to add exceptions to proxy settings:

Adding Proxy Exceptions

It's also important to note that your web browser proxy settings for Internet Explorer (Win) and Safari (Mac) on the client need to have proper web access for Kurzweil 3000 Web License client to function.

Microsoft ISA

Microsoft ISA is one of the more common proxy server solutions.

In the Firewall Client tab, make sure that Use automatic configuration script is enabled.

Note: the Internal Properties GUI of 2004 and 2006 should be similar (if not the same).

Disabling Web Caching:

This site has some instructions on how to create a caching rule for the server: Caching Rules

In Figure 7, you need to add the applicable sites listed below in this article based on the version of Kurzweil 3000 you are using.

In Figure 9, choose the option Never, no content will ever be cached.

Please continue reading for specific connection addresses you would need to make an exception for.
