Always update Kurzweil before you attempt troubleshooting
Before you attempt any troubleshooting steps or contact us for technical support, it's always a good idea to make sure your version of Kurzweil 3000 is fully updated for the version you have installed. It's possible that a troubleshooting solution we provide may not work if you're using an outdated version, for example 13.01 instead of 13.10. Often you may find that simply updating Kurzweil (a.k.a. patching) will resolve your problem.
The most simple way to update Kurzweil is through its built-in updater: on the Kurzweil 3000 menu click Online -> Updates... (seen below) and follow the prompts to download and install the latest update (i.e. patch) found by the auto-search.
Tips for using Kurzweil 3000's built-in updater
If you use Windows Vista or Windows 7, a security feature called User Account Control (UAC) may prevent Kurzweil's built-in updater from functioning. If you have errors during the update process you may need to turn off UAC in Windows; or right-click the Kurzweil 3000.exe and select Run as Administrator. The full path of the .exe on 32-bit operating systems is C:\Program Files\Kurzweil Educational Systems\Kurzweil 3000\Kurzweil 3000.exe; the full path on 64-bit operating systems is C:\Program Files (x86)\Kurzweil Educational Systems\Kurzweil 3000\Kurzweil 3000.exe.
You can always find out what version of Kurzweil 3000 you have by clicking Help -> About Kurzweil 3000...(as seen below) in the Kurzweil menu. This will open an About Kurzweil 3000 window, which will provide details regarding your version, such as "Kurzweil 3000 Professional (Color), Version 11.05."
If you're using an English / US version of Kurzweil 3000, do not select any foreign language updates (e.g. French, Dutch, etc.) to download. If you install a foreign language update, it will turn your English menus into another language.
If you accidentally installed a foreign language patch and want to switch back to English menus, you will need download and install the applicable English patch on our website's Patches and Updates page.
Sometimes an organization's network firewall or proxy server will cause the auto-search in Kurzweil's built-in updater to fail and return an error. If this is the case, it is recommended that you download any available updates manually from our website's Patches and Updates page.
Tips for downloading and installing updates from our website
Close Kurzweil 3000 before attempting to run a manual update from our website.
If you are downloading and installing a patch from our website, do not attempt to install a patch for versions of Kurzweil 3000 you do not have installed. For example, if you have Kurzweil 3000 v10 installed, do not try to install any of the v11 patches. Doing so may break your installation of Kurzweil, refer to above information about checking your version.
Any patch for the actual Kurzweil 3000 program (referred to as the "client software") on the website may be applied to any installed version of Kurzweil 3000 as long as the version number matches. For example, if you have the Kurzweil 3000 v11 Standalone, Network, or Web License Client installed on your computer, any listed v11 patch for the client software may be applied to your installation, normally you want only the latest patch available for your version.
